Squint / strabismus is name given to the disease where the eyes are not aligned in the same direction all the time. The squinting eye may turn in, out or sometimes up or down. This can be present all or only part of the time, in one eye or alternating between two eyes.
Why does it happen
It happens due to an imbalance of the muscles which move the eye , spectacle power( specially plus numbers), childhood illnesses , nerve paralysis, injury etc.
Effects Of Squint
The ill effects are mainly in children. Squint can cause poor vision, double vision and loss
of depth perception and it is a definite cosmetic blemish which can cause psychological problem
in various people
Diagnosing Squint
Squint assessement includes –
- Refractive status of the eye, especially in children.
- Assessment of the amount and type of squint.
- Test for binocular vision.
- Fundus examination including fixation pattern.
- Investigation for the cause of squint especially in adult squint.
Treatment
Treatment is individualized and the, treatment options essentially include:
- Glasses.
- Treatment of Amblyopia by Patching of one/ both eyes to improve vision in children.
- Prisms in spectacles.
- Botox injection.
- Surgery.
Squint Surgery
Essentially involves moving the muscles back or forward to weaken or strengthen them. Can be done at any age varying from case to case. Done in Local anaesthesia for adults as daycare procedure and in general anaesthesia for children. Some cases may need more than one surgery.
